We have a wide range of volunteer roles available in, for example: Branch Support and Governance; Administrative Support; Classroom Support; Publicity, and Project Working.

Volunteers can contribute as much or as little of their time as they have available, and the roles can be defined by this.

Anyone who is interested in getting actively involved in helping us in this way should in the first instance contact Jude Murphy, Education Coordinator for Volunteering within the region via jmurphy@wea.org.uk to further discuss potential activities.

The North East region currently includes 10 volunteer-led branches.

Seven of these are run on the basis of a geographical locality:

  • Darlington
  • Durham
  • Newcastle
  • North Tyneside/Whitley Bay
  • South Tyneside
  • Sunderland
  • Whickham

And three are thematic branches – an innovation from within this region:

  • Green
  • History and Heritage
  • Northumbria Arts

Branch committees meet approximately monthly to plan and put into action courses, events, publications and projects.  Some feature volunteer-led study groups, which develop their own learning by sharing facilitation, seminar-style, among the group members. Some are active in lobbying for change, while all adhere to the commitment to shaping a better world through adult education.

There is always scope to develop further branches, so if you believe your geographical area or preferred theme is not currently covered, please get in touch and we’ll do our best to support you to initiate new activity.
