Northwich Branch seminar on The Glasgow Style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and "The Four" held at Weaver Hall Museum, Northwich on 17 May 2019
This was an extended three-hour cultural studies seminar - facilitated by Education Coordinator Andy Jurgis for the Northwich Branch - attended by 29 people which was very encouraging for this type of short course in the future. The Weaver Hall Museum was an attractive new venue for the Branch.
The seminar topic was discussed in the context of Liverpool Walker Art Gallery's current major exhibition on Charles Rennie Mackintosh: Making the Glasgow Style. Andy had liaised with the Walker about the seminar which introduced the work of Mackintosh and fellow Glaswegian artists - Margaret and Frances Macdonald, and Herbert MacNair - as it developed at the end of the 19th Century and beginning of the 20th Century.
The seminar provided an opportunity to discuss Mackintosh and The Four's work more generally and share expectations about or reactions to the Walker exhibition which is proving very popular. The seminar involved illustrated tutor presentations alongside opportunities for questions and small group discussion.
After the success of offering such a seminar for the first time, the Branch is now looking ahead next year to offering a day school on another topic involving at least a couple of seminars.
