Who we are
The WEA is a unique charity and the UK’s largest voluntary sector provider of adult education. With a clear vision and a strong social purpose, we bring great teaching to local communities, with life-changing courses held in clubs, pubs, workplaces, schools and almost anywhere else you can think of. Since 1903, we have been giving disadvantaged people the opportunity to return to learning – inspiring them to realise their full potential and become active, engaged citizens. We see education as a tool for social justice, not just self-improvement, and we pride ourselves on making learning egalitarian and accessible. Volunteers play a central role in everything we do, from governance through to classroom support, helping us deliver courses to 50,000 people in 2,300 locations – and enabling us to reach 80% of the population.
About the role
Empowering us to deliver inspiring education and learning opportunities, you will drive continuous improvement in teaching and assessment across your region. What’s more, we will look to you to forge and build key partnerships, actively develop new business and identify new sources of funding, so you will enjoy considerable impact on our bottom line. But you won’t just be the catalyst that transforms our students: you’ll do the same for your colleagues and our vital volunteers, building on our commitment to being Investors in People. Depending on your skills and interests, you could find yourself taking the lead in English, Maths and ESOL; focusing on tutor or curriculum development; driving our digital leadership; acting as our safeguarding lead; or leading crucial cross-regional projects.
Our students are as diverse as Britain itself, and it’s vital that our team reflects the country’s make-up. But whatever your background, you’ll possess the skills to operate in the foreground: extensive experience of strategic development in adult education, strong new business skills, real flair for relationship building and great report-writing and presentation abilities. You’ll also bring passion in spades and willingness to exceed our expectations every day.
To apply for this role, you will need to submit a cover letter (maximum of 2 pages) which details how you meet the requirements set out in the Job Description and Person Specification together with a summary CV.
