Improve your functional English and maths skills for work and life.

From counting change at the bus stop to portioning a cake, maths creeps into our lives more than we would like, so why not learn to be more comfortable with numbers?

English skills help empower us to do our best in whatever we study and, of course, the WEA is here to help.

Some courses will need an initial assessment to see if this course is right for you.

Most of our skills based courses are free! Find our FAQs at the bottom of the page.

To read more about the course just select ‘more details'. To book, simply tick the box next to the course(s) you are interested in and then press the book button to go to our checkout. You can also call our friendly team on 0300 303 3464 for more information or help with booking.

The WEA was established in 1903 and has provided part time courses for adults for nearly 120 years.

Why are we different?

All of our courses are live and tutor-led, unlike other learning providers. We use platforms like Zoom and Canvas, to allow learners to work together, make new friends and get feedback on work.

"I liked the fact that I could do my work at home, when I wanted to. The tutor could comment on our work. We could see other people's work. there was time to speak on Zoom to others too".

Maths and English functional skills FAQs

How will I know if I am on the right course?

Before you enrol on a course, you will need to do an initial assessment and attend an interview. This helps the tutor place you on the right course and level. You can call our friendly team on 0300 303 3464 for more information or help with booking

What support will I get during my course?

Your tutor will organise 1:1 tutorials throughout the course. Your tutor will answer your questions, review your progress and provide you with any help.

What is the difference between the levels?

Level one is for those who have some knowledge of maths or English and the terms used, and have scored up to 70% in the Initial Assessment.

Level 2 is for those who have already passed the Level 1 qualification, have a good knowledge of the terms used, score 90% or more in the initial assessment and are confident in the exam process.

Having a level 1 qualification is like a GCSE at grades D–G or 1-3. A level 2 qualification is like a GCSE at grade A*–C or 4-9.

Should I enrol on an accredited course if I have not studied for a long time?

In most cases, it is better to do a “Get Ready” for a course. This will help you get back into a study mindset and help to build your confidence. It can get you ready to face the challenge of doing an exam.

What if I fail the exam, can I repeat the course?

You will not be able to enrol on the same course again, but you can do a re-sit. You could also do the 'Get Ready' course of the same subject and level. This will help you prepare for the re-sit.

How long is the accredited course?

The accredited course is 55 hours long. Over three months. You will attend 2 sessions a week at 2.5hours per session i.e., 5 hours per week in total.

Where will the exam take place?

The exam will take place in your home. This takes place online. The tutor will give you more details about this during the sessions.

What if I can’t attend a session?

If you are unable to attend a session, please let the tutor know beforehand. They can give you all the work you miss and support you in your learning.
