Art History: Who's the Muse? Five Pioneering Women Artists: Eileen Agar, Claude Cahun, Isabel Rawsthorne, Dora Maar and Lee Miller

What is a muse? How and why has this convention endured for centuries? This course explores the identity and representation of the muse looking at the lives and work of five female artists: Claude Cahun, Eileen Agar, Isabel Rawsthorne, Dora Maar and Lee Miller. Each has enjoyed a revival as practitioners of dynamic art forms in painting, photography and sculpture. Cahun, Agar and Miller escaped comfortable backgrounds to pursue independent paths amid the avant-garde of the 1920s and ‘30s. Rawsthorne was long regarded as the beautiful muse of Jacob Epstein, Alberto Giacometti and Francis Bacon, while Maar remained in Picasso’s shadow for decades. We explore how each of the three artists challenged social and cultural conventions of their day to produce some of the most startling artworks of modern British art.

History: Radical England: Wat Tyler to George Orwell

This five-week course explores the tradition of radical thought and protest in England, from the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381 to the writings of George Orwell. It examines how individuals and movements challenged authority, demanded rights, and imagined alternative societies across six centuries. From medieval uprisings and Civil War radicals to 19th-century reformers and 20th-century critics of fascism and empire, we trace the evolution of dissent in politics, literature, and popular action. Using primary texts and historical analysis, the course reveals how radical voices—often suppressed or overlooked—helped shape England’s political and cultural landscape in enduring and provocative ways.

Literature: British novels of the 1960s

There is an energy and vitality about 1960s British fiction, with new developments in postcolonial fiction, spy fiction, science fiction and children’s fantasy. We begin with Alan Garner’s The Weirdstone of Brisingamen and end with 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke. We’ll be able to share and debate interpretations, sharpen our critical and appreciative faculties, understand what fiction can tell us about the society and culture that produced it, and, hopefully, be inspired to read other works by the writers featured on the course.
