Archaeology: The Archaeology of Grimsby

Underneath the streets of Great Grimsby there lie three destroyed churches, several thousand medieval corpses, the remains of two cloisters, and a buried medieval port, complete with wharves, 'mud docks', crane bases, back-filled cellars and warehouse foundations. Could St Marys church, closed in 1586, have been founded in the Anglo- Scandinavian period and perhaps give some indication of 10th century settlement at around the time of the legendary Grim? The course will look at the development of human settlement around salty inlets and muddy creeks and on the higher and drier promontory where the town developed.

History: The Nuns and their School

Henry VIII built Beaulieu Palace (aka New Hall) just north of Chelmsford between 1517 and 1521. Its chapel ironically celebrated his marriage to Katherine of Aragon. His split from Rome, divorce from Katherine and the Protestant Reformation that followed placed England under a Franco-Spanish invasion threat. English Catholics, principally old aristocratic families, experienced discriminatory penal laws. They worshipped clandestinely, and at great personal risk, in their isolated rural estates. Catholic education was forbidden so boarding schools for were set up in northern France and the Spanish Netherlands (now Belgium). In 1642 the Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre established a school for young English Catholic ladies in Liège which was sponsored by large benefactions from leading Catholic families. The last extremist Catholic bolt was shot with Charles Stuart’s defeat at Culloden in 1745. The 1791 Catholic Relief Act removed many of the legal restraints and just in time, as the Reign of Terror in France and the invasion of its neighbours by the atheistic French army imperilled the Catholic orders who evacuated to England. The Canonesses re-established their school at New Hall. They have left a unique archive which gives a wonderful insight into that rare phenomenon for the times, education for girls.
