Course overview

The purpose of this course is to develop learner’s mathematical confidence and study strategies as they prepare for the City and Guilds Functional Skills test paper. The course will focus on individual participants’ mathematical weaknesses and support them to overcome these. The WEA uses its online learning area called Canvas to support your learning. A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you. We expect you to attend your classroom sessions and make time to do any required activities in your own.

Course description

The course will focus on individual participants’ mathematical weaknesses and support them to overcome these. We will look at different approaches to solving mathematical problems and you will be encouraged to adopt the approaches you feel most confident with. You will identify mathematical strengths and weaknesses, and individual feedback will focus on supporting you to overcome your weaknesses and build your confidence. We will learn different techniques and you will describe the approaches you use. In the sessions you will be encouraged to collaborate with other learners. You will learn practical techniques to overcome math anxiety and build a strong foundation of self-assurance in tackling maths problems. From time management tips to problem-solving techniques, we’ll cover it all. You’ll learn how to decode exam questions, approach complex questions with ease and present your solutions clearly and logically. Designed to boost you mathematical confidence and equip you with effective strategies to excel in exams, the course is tailored to help students of all levels conquer their maths related challenges.
