Course overview

This 10-week course will prepare you with necessary skills and knowledge to become effective maternity support worker. This course introduces the role and responsibilities of a Maternity Support worker, understanding the importance of supporting pregnant women and newborns and introduction to basic healthcare practices and ethics in maternity care. This course also emphasizes personal and professional development, critical thinking, and the application of learned concepts in practical settings. Through a combination of theoretical learning, practical exercises, and group activities, you will be prepared to make meaningful contributions in the field of maternity care. It includes study skills and referencing to also help you prepare for further study.

Course description

This course not only aims to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary for the role of a Maternity Support Worker but also emphasizes personal and professional development, critical thinking, and the application of learned concepts in practical settings.

On this course, you will understand the significance of the role of Maternity support worker in supporting new mothers, babies, and families. It explores some common maternity conditions such as miscarriage, stillbirth, baby jaundice, infant feeding, induction of labour, what happens during a caesarean section, for example. You will recognise the value and impact of MSWs in providing emotional and practical support during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum periods. This course will help you develop professional attributes such as reflection and contribute to the development of those around you.

You will be asked to complete a weekly learning diary and one short answer quiz following each day. You will be required to work together in small groups to plan a presentation to the wider group about the issues you have explored in this course and how it is changing thinking and action in your lives. We will help you to apply for the role of a maternity support worker. This course includes study skills and referencing to also help you prepare for further study.
