Are you interested in learning about a few topics in child psychology as an introduction to the fascinating subject? You will find out about the origin and importance of attachment theories. You will learn about how children develop a range of skills by playing by themselves and with others. You will investigate the development of speech, language and communication: one of the milestones of child development: You’ll also find out about a famous study into child aggression, consider challenging behaviour in children and learn how to support children to regulate their emotions.

Course description

This course is a short introduction to the fascinating, complex field of child psychology. You will find out about the origin and importance of attachment theories and how these theories are still relevant today. You will learn about the importance of play as a way for children to develop a range of skills. Through discussion with your fellow learners, you will investigate what we currently know about one of the milestones of child development: speech, language and communication development. You will also find out about a famous study into child aggression. By considering what we know about challenging behaviour in children, you will learn about the impact of the behaviour on the child and others and discover ways to support children to regulate their own emotions. Throughout the course, you will discuss ideas in small groups with tutor support. The work of influential psychologists will be examined to provide a background to contemporary knowledge.
