Course overview

This course is an overview of how schools in the UK work and to prepare learners for employment as a School Meals Supervisory Assistant (SMSA). You will learn about the different types of school in the UK, including SEND. You will learn about different ages and key stages in education and an overview of the UK Government national curriculum. In this course you will learn about Safeguarding in the UK and why it is important, and what to do. You will also learn about food hygiene in schools in the UK and why it is important, and what to do. You will have the opportunity to gain certificates in Safeguarding and Food Hygiene to support your employment applications for working in schools and colleges.

Course description

During this course you will cover:

  • How schools work/ Safeguarding/ Food hygiene is an introduction course to support learners who would like to work as a SMSA.

  • The role of a SMSA (School Meals Supervisory Assistant).

  • Why SMSA is a popular role of employment in schools in the UK.

  • How to supervise children during the lunch break by ensuring the security, safety and wellbeing and care of the pupils of the school.

  • Promoting children's social, emotional and physical development during the lunch time period.

  • Behaviour management of pupils at breaks.

  • How to encourage pupils to eat their meal and make healthy choices.

  • How to supervise the play periods during the lunch period.

  • How to take the reasonable precautions whilst in charge of the pupils to see that they do nothing that is likely to injure themselves or others.

  • How to play with, and support, the pupils in their games.

  • How to deal positively with behaviour, rewarding good behaviour and issuing appropriate sanctions where behaviour breaks rules.

  • How to communicate any issues with children’s behaviour to your line manager or class teachers.

  • Safeguarding and Food Hygiene certification.
