Course overview

This short course aims to encourage you to get involved in Mental Health awareness week 2024. The theme to support mental wellbeing this year is 'Movement: moving more for our mental health'. Being active is essential for good mental health and wellbeing, yet so many of us struggle to get enough exercise. This gentle, mat-based yoga session will focus on gentle and accessible movement to support your mental wellbeing. Yoga practice involves connecting movement with your breathing, this helps you to concentrate and empty the mind of unwanted clutter. The approach to movement will be person-centred, practices will be adapted to meet your individual needs and to move within your own comfortable range of movement.

Course description

Have you considered that yoga could support your mental wellbeing? Mental Health awareness week is highlighting the importance of movement and being active to improve our mental health. Yoga is an ideal practice to support your mental well-being as it encourages you to listen to your body and to move with ease. Yoga offers multifaceted support for mental health. Through its combination of physical postures, breathwork, and meditation, yoga addresses various aspects of mental well-being.

1. Stress Reduction: Yoga encourages relaxation through deep breathing and gentle movements, which can lower cortisol levels and alleviate stress.

2. Emotional Regulation: The mindfulness cultivated in yoga helps individuals become more aware of their emotions and develop healthier ways of responding to them.

3. Improved Mood: Regular practice of yoga has been linked to increased levels of serotonin and other mood-regulating neurotransmitters, leading to a more positive outlook.

4. Anxiety Management: Yoga teaches techniques for calming the nervous system, reducing the symptoms of anxiety and promoting a sense of inner peace.

5. Enhanced Self-awareness: By tuning into the body and breath, yoga fosters greater self-awareness, helping individuals recognise and address underlying mental health issues.
