Course overview

Would you like to feel more confident in conversations, meetings with deaf people? this BSL taster can help you feel more comfortable in conversations with your family members and friends or customers/work colleagues who have hearing impairment. This is a fun and informative introduction to BSL. In this taster session, you will fingerspell the alphabet, learn to spell names and greet each other. Learning BSL can go a long way towards boosting your confidence in different situations. This taster is aimed at complete beginners and those who would like to brush up on their BSL skills.

Course description

Come and join us for this BSL taster at WHIST and familiarize yourself with the fundamentals of BSL. This taster covers various teaching methods, including group work, pair work, role-plays and games to enhance learning. You will also be able to set your own personal learning goals and get one to one support towards achieving them. The friendly atmosphere will offer the opportunity to learn new skills at your own pace.

The WEA strives to create a safe environment to learn BSL. We’re sure you will feel comfortable practising your skills with the tutor and other members of the group. When you complete this session, you can progress to a BSL course. The next course in this series is the Beginner’s British Sign Language (BSL) course. You’ll need access to the internet to take this British Sign Language taster. Your tutor will upload useful materials to Canvas, the WEA’s digital learning platform. The WEA is committed to accessible adult education for all. If you have any accessibility requirements, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate your needs. This taster is free for WHIST members.

What financial support is available?

We don't want anything to stand in your way when it comes to bringing Adult learning within reach so if you need anything to support you to achieve your goals then speak to one of our education experts during your enrolment journey. Most of our courses are government funded but if you don't qualify or need alternative financial help to access them then let us know.
