Course overview

Do you lack confidence with maths? Do you want to be able to support your children with their schoolwork?  As a parent, you play a pivotal role in shaping your child's mathematical future. This course will empower you with creative and practical approaches to make numbers engaging and accessible. On this course, you will learn fun and engaging ways to support your children with number skills development that will help you grow as a maths educator and foster a positive attitude towards learning and numeracy.

Course description

By the end of the course, you will have identified three practical strategies to support your children with maths and identified ways to:

  • Make maths learning fun by introducing learning through play and messy play.

  • Explore different ways to use household objects to explore mathematical concepts such as shape and space, measurement, addition and subtraction, number and place value, fractions, position and direction.

  • Introduce numbers into everyday activities like cooking, shopping or walking to school. Let your child measure ingredients, explore fractions while cutting food into equal parts, and discuss how recipes can be scaled up or down.

  • Integrate math into storytelling, music and play by creating stories with your child as the protagonist. Let them solve mathematical challenges in the story, encouraging them to use their problem-solving skills. Plan math-themed scavenger hunts or treasure hunts. Provide clues that involve counting, measuring, or identifying shapes. Introduce math concepts through music and rhythm. Clap out patterns, sing counting songs, or make up songs that involve numbers. Connecting math with music stimulates both sides of the brain and enhances memory retention.

  • Engage your child's curiosity with interactive maths games and puzzles.
