Music Appreciation: From Glinka to Tchaikovsky: Russian Music under the Tsars

The sparkling ballets of Tchaikovsky, the fantasy of Rimsky Korsakov’s Sheherazade and the grandeur of Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov. Russian music came alive in the 19th century, and was soon to become a force to be reckoned with on the world stage. Breaking free from Western influence, composers found their inspiration in folk and church traditions, and in so doing formulated inventive new sound worlds. In this four-week course, we chart how these pioneering composers walked a tightrope between their personal vision and the strictures of Tsarist acceptability. No prior knowledge is required; just a willingness to listen, learn and enjoy.
