Students will have the opportunity to use a range of practical exercises at home, using their own digital app, piano or keyboard.

Course description

Weekly classes will run on Zoom, supported by the WEA's digital learning platform Canvas.

We will explore various aspects of Western musical theory, from rhythm to melody and harmony, and discuss how these features can be applied to either creating music or analysing an existing piece of music. This course will also branch out from traditional Western music theory and explore some of the music theory of other cultures that has become integrated and fused with our own. Students will have the chance to try out a range of practical exercises at home, either using their own piano/keyboard or a digital app.

Since this course requires existing knowledge, your tutor will undertake an initial assessment with you at the start of the course in the form of a short general knowledge quiz.

Here is some guidance for the kind of foundation knowledge that will be needed for this course:

- An ability to confidently read notes in the treble clef and some awareness of the bass clef

- A basic understanding of the Western key signature system and how this links to scales

- An understanding of note values and the basics of time signature

Please note: This course would not be suitable for complete beginners.
