Course description

Beatrix Potter is very well known as an artist and illustrator as well as a writer of children's books . Recently beautifully depicted by Renee Zellweger in the film Miss Potter alongside Ewan Mc Gregor as Norman Warne and Emily Watson as Millie Warne ..... Her life unfolded in the film and explains her journey as an artist , writer and illustrator . In this session for those of you who have not seen the film we of course look at her life , loves and struggles as an artist within a specific class of society during that time. We will explore her child hood and early influences at the time as well as looking at the social stigma attached to a woman of social standing working during this period. This session also gives you the opportunity to see the other side of Miss Potters achievements . For example, her life after her successful books , her illustrations discoveries and work as a successful botanist and conservationist . We also explore elements and influences that the film does not cover . Interestingly we will look into how her illustrative and graphic genius allowed her to enable her books to be published so cheaply as she requested, with examples from pastiches done by your lecturer explaining her artistic methods and techniques.
