Course overview

This course will discover five short stories by international women writers, some writing in English, and others whose work we will read in translation. The stories will be provided on Canvas, with supporting articles to read. There is no need to buy a text for this course. They are as follows: Lying Under the Apple Tree - Alice Munro. Before - Annie Saumont. The Reservoir - Janet Frame. An Unfinished Record - Zhang Jie. Newlywed - Banana Yoshimoto. Each week will consider an author and their text and we shall discuss the various significance of each story, as well as its broader relationship with women’s fiction.

Course description

The course will serve as an introduction to the plurality of women’s voices in twentieth century fiction ranging from China and Japan, the US, New Zealand and France, and is designed to encourage participants to read more widely into translated literature and to thus discover alternative histories, visions and perspectives, while discovering those common experiences shared by women in the last 150 years, such as the struggle for enfranchisement, politically and culturally in light of patriarchal structures across the world. This is of course a struggle that still continues, which signals the continuing relevance of these authors. This means that our themes will revolve around the nature of identity and how women’s voices have interrogated the roles traditionally assigned to them, such as mothers, wives, daughters, or lovers.

The stories exhibit different styles and reflect different literary movements, which have occurred in the twentieth century. We will discuss and relate to these to the development of each author’s voice and to the broader struggle for an enfranchised woman’s voice. Our discussions will be wide-ranging and lively and the course is designed to offer a stepping stone to a broader reading of women’s fiction around the world. Come and be intellectually stimulated and imaginatively entertained.
