Course overview

This course will examine five Korean short stories and function as a taster-course to Korean literature in general, which has recently come to the fore with the award of the Nobel Prize to Han Kang. It will serve to broaden your appreciation of until recently a minority literature. We will analyse those elements which have contributed to Korea’s distinctive contribution to world literature in the last 100 years, and discuss the relationship between a politically troubled history and creativity, discovering as we do a range of male and female voices. There will be ample opportunities for discussion in what will be lively sessions.

Course description

We will explore five short stories from the Penguin Book of Korean Short Stories, which is the recommended text for the course. These are:

Yi Sang, ‘Wings’

Pak Wansŏ, ‘Winter Outing’

Choi Suchol, ‘River Dark’

P’yŏn Hyeyŏng, ‘The First Anniversary’

Kim Aeran, ‘The Future of Silence’

These stories will introduce us to Korean literature before the Second World War to more recent stories from the last twenty years. Each will provide a window into the identity of Korean and the relationship between the traditional and modern in Korean society.

Each narrative will as well confront aspects of the human condition that are shared universally, while recognising others that are governed by the history and traditions of the Korean experience.

We will also be able to evaluate how Korean literature has reacted towards literary movements such as Realism, Modernism and Postmodernism, while we will recognise how the possibilities of the short story as a genre have been negotiated with generally by Korean writers.

Come and discover a new literature and its urgent voices.
