Course overview
Course description
Reading can be a source of great pleasure, it can offer escape as well as opening the eyes of the reader to new situations, places and ways of thinking. This course invites you to join with others to read the same book each month and then come together to explore the impact that it has had on your but also to learn how others have been influenced by the text. All views are valid, and indeed the course will be richer if participants have different views on the books read. The books, except for one, will be provided free to borrow for the class from Arnold library, which will also be the venue for our meetings. The final list of books is to be confirmed but will include works by both male and female writers; there will be works based at home and abroad and we will explore historical fiction. The class will be face to face in an informal discussion format and may also include small group conversations. The course will be supported with additional resources on the WEA online platform – Canvas. The course will be equally suited to people who read rarely and those who read frequently.
Books to be read at Book of the Month are:
Memento Mori by Muriel Spark
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
The History of Bees by Maja Lunde
The above are the first three choices for Sept, Oct and Nov. Also to consider later in the course: The Rainbow by DH Lawrence and Shadow of the Crown by Patricia Bracewell.
