Course overview

In this course we consider a range of texts across the ages, and a range of authors who may surprise us. We will be studying visionaries, radicals, the outspoken and the contemplative. There will be true encounters with wild beasts described, battles of will, acts of daring and downright mischief. Questions will be asked about the societies forming the backdrop to these texts, and how the call for justice was vital to giving half of each population a voice. How do these writers make a case for justice? How do they present to us the potential in their characters and their confidence in themselves? The link between all these texts? - they were all written by women.

Course description

In this course we consider a range of texts across the ages, and a range of authors who may surprise us. We will be studying visionaries, radicals, the outspoken and the contemplative. There will be true encounters with wild beasts described, battles of will, acts of daring and downright mischief. Questions will be asked about the societies forming the backdrop to these texts, and how the call for justice was vital to giving half of each population a voice. How do these writers make a case for truth and fairness? How do they present to us the potential in their characters and their confidence in themselves? Our sweep of genres under study will include autobiography from medieval times, through an extraordinary record of the voice of one who could not write; fierce polemic from the eighteenth century arguing passionately for fundamental changes to the orthodoxies of the age; fiction ranging from the searchingly realistic to the newest fantasy; travel writing full of humour; non-fiction from the 1920s, and from our times, arguing with quiet conviction for the rational and humane basis for change. These texts all speak to us today. The link between them? They were all written by women.
