Why do fairy tales remain relevant in 2024? There is a plethora of films and artwork drawing from the intricate universe of these tales. Writers frequently reinterpret fairy tales, often in unexpected manners. Join poet Sue Burge as she delves into the historical significance of fairy tales and their presence in various cultural settings today. This captivating day session in Kings Lynn will delve into the magical realm of fairy tales, examining how authors reimagine them and the diverse cultural settings in which they appear. Special attention will be given to how modern poets incorporate them into their work. By the end of the session, participants will have the opportunity to experiment with rewriting a fairy tale through accessible and enjoyable creative exercises.

Course description

Fairytales have been part of our folk lore and history for hundreds of years. So why are they still relevant in 2024? Films and artwork referencing the rich world of these tales abound. Writers often re-work fairy tales, often in surprising ways. Join poet Sue Burge to explore the history of fairy tales, and the many cultural contexts in which they can be found today. This exciting and engaging day school in Kings Lynn, will explore the enchanting world of fairytales. We will look at how authors reimagine them and the different cultural contexts which you can find them. There will be a particular emphasis on how contemporary poets weave them into their work. At the end of the day, there will be a chance for you to try your hand at re-writing a fairy-tale using accessible and enjoyable creative exercises and gain valuable feedback from both the tutor and your peers alike.
