Course overview
Course description
In this course we will be discussing a range of texts by Irish writers written in English; the period the texts will be drawn from will be between 1990-2023. Together, we will be studying works by a wide range of authors, and our focus will be on prose fiction and poetry.
We will be considering the background to these writings, and how they reflect a time of great social, economic and political change. We will also be exploring the themes the writers develop, and asking searching questions about the texts. What is each author’s intention? What is influencing the author’s writing, and what assertions are they making in each text? What choices do the authors make in terms of style to reflect the context, ideas and emotional life of their writing? What is distinctive about Irish writing from this period? Through our discussions, we will be working out our own readings of each text, as individuals and as a group.
