Course overview

Would you like to take your Latin beyond GCSE level and develop your ability to read and enjoy Latin literature? You will use the Latin you have already learnt to translate, discuss and analyse original Latin literature, both verse and prose. Through online activities such as quizzes and assignments and group work in the online sessions, you will discover the enduring fascination and importance of some of the greatest literature ever written whilst consolidating and extending your knowledge and understanding of Latin grammar.

Course description

Come and learn Latin in a friendly, supportive and stimulating group.

This course is intended for students who have covered the grammar required for GCSE Latin.

You should have learnt how to decline nouns and adjectives, form verbs and participles, and handle complex constructions such as indirect statement and purpose clauses.

You will not be expected to remember all of this. Part of each session will be devoted to revising grammar and you, the students, will help to choose what we revise. As well as consolidating previous learning, you will learn some new skills through a mixture of grammatical exercises, quizzes and, above all, by reading Latin, in particular extracts from a Virgil’s masterpiece,

The Aeneid. Wherever possible we will consider the impact of the ancient Romans on modern society and culture.

The aim is to enable you to become independent readers of Latin, moving towards the standard required for AS level, and to continue you on the path of enjoying some of the greatest literature ever written.

This course will give you skills which you can apply to your understanding of history, society and culture and boost your confidence and well-being by successfully meeting the challenges of an ancient language and learning from the insights of everyone in the group.
