Course overview

From Abel Gance’s pioneering Napoleon to 120 Beats Per Minute about the Aids crisis, we’ll explore key moments of French history as they were captured by French film-makers, getting to know key films and directors from France along the way

Course description

Cinema is a great historian. Whether film-makers have set out to tell epic histories or whether they make slice of contemporary life, we can learn a lot about a country’s history and national characteristic through its films.

In this 6- week course, we'll track French history through the lens of its films and cinematic representations. We’ll look at historic films and works that document and comment on current developments; at political exposés, documentaries, and comedies, at real and imagined histories and biopics of historic personalities from the breadth of French film history.

A course for all those interested in film, history and cultural studies and politics.
