Course overview

This eight week course will explore the part that memory and personal experience play in the creation of poems, short stories and autobiographical fiction.

Course description

When William Blake famously remarked that memory was not a muse, he was wrong. The memory of personal experiences is in fact a writer’s greatest resource, and most poetry and fiction can be traced back to a personal origin, no matter how obliquely that is referred to.

We will concentrate on discovering the personal origins and sources for your voices as writers and our discussions will enable you to isolate and exploit those experiences in your lives which have left an indelible impression. Alongside this, we will discuss those elements that contribute to your unique voices.

Additionally, the course will aim to stimulate you to write, and integral to this is the building up of your confidence to commit writing to the page. You have something to say, and it deserves to be heard.

Finally, we will explore modern techniques of writing poetry, short stories and auto-fiction, and you will come to understand how technique enhances your ability to execute your intentions for writing. In order to further this, each session will involve discussions, the exchange of ideas and allow time to listen to each others’ pieces.

Come and surprise yourself with your own creativity and unlock what you have always wanted to express.
