Level 1: Covers basic skills and knowledge needed for this subject
Level 2: Building on basic knowledge or experience. Similar to Grade 4/ C at GCSE or O level in England or Standards in Scotland.
Level 3: Learn about the topic in-depth and have a broad range of skills. Independent working Equivalent to an A level in England or Higher in Scotland.
Beginners: A perfect introduction if you have no experience and skills in this subject.
Improvers: The next step if you have basic skills or knowledge but want to progress them further.
Advanced: Build on the solid experience and skills you have in this subject, applying your skills and knowledge in a more complex way.
Course overview
Course description
The course takes the form of a Tutor-led Writers Workshop. The first two thirds of each session consists of learners reading their previous week's Homework piece followed by constructive and supportive Feedback from the group, followed then by a short in-class exercise which leads directly into that week's Homework. The Homework set is the writing of a Short Story of some sort. (usually 1000-1200 words).
Whether you are a beginner or an experienced writer, this course will guide you through the process of conceptualizing, drafting and revising a short story.
Throughout the course you will:
Explore key storytelling elements such as character development. Plot structure and setting.
Learn to create conflict, establish themes, and build tension to captivate readers.
Participate in writing exercises designed to spark creativity and refine narrative skills.
Engage in constructive peer workshops to receive feedback and critique.
Examine various writing styles and techniques by reading and analysing short stories from renowned authors.
This course emphasizes hands-on learning, encouraging you to write, revise and ultimately produce a polished short story. By the end of the course, you will have a greater understanding of short story structure, a completed draft, and the skills to continue developing your craft.
