Course description

In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I love and admire the idea of taking a half-day writing course on Romance.” Okay. Jane Austen was writing about a beloved. However, we all recognise the concept- writing in our attics is tough. Working alongside others to gain support and inspiration is what this course is all about. In addition, we will address how to create chemistry between the two main love interests, and ways to refresh the genre conventions. We will explore tricky technical aspects of Romance writing, such as how to make the switch from, ‘No, never’ to ‘Forever’ believable.

Key Learning Aims

• To look at the 7 areas of Romance

* We aim to read and explore a range of Romance genre extracts, work out why they are so good, and write something wonderful ourselves.

• We aim to respond to writing exercises that will generate ideas and content for our Romance.

• We will look at paid publishing and self-publishing routes for Romance writers.

By the end of the course, students will feel better able to get on with writing a Romance of their own.
