Course overview

A number of American artists forged successful and influential careers in Britain, and we will discuss examples of their work dating from the 1760s to the 1910s. Come along and join this engaging and informative online course where you can learn something new and socialise with other like-minded people.

Course description

Britain was an important destination for American artists during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

This course will explore the reasons for this: what drew the artists and what led many to stay? And we will consider the importance of their contribution to British art. Key figures to be discussed will be Benjamin West, John Singleton Copley, James McNeill Whistler and John Singer Sargent.
