Course overview
Course description
We start with a look at a remarkable artist and her epic historical paintings, a genre very much a male domain. Then, we move onto WW1 and women artists who were driven to create art of the scenes around them, despite, in most countries, women were not allowed to be official war artists. World war II brings the first official British women war artists and images of the home front, and aspects of war. Finally, in 1945 we meet an amazing, self-funded, Canadian artist who paints the war’s end battlefields, there are images by survivors, and we end with another remarkable artist who captures the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.
