Course overview
Course description
This course is a detailed exploration of the artists who flourished in the Low Countries during the fifteenth century, a time of great artistic flourishing for this part of the world, and saw the establishment of one of the great schools of European art. You will explore its rise during the fifteenth century and debate case-studies of some of its greatest exponents- the van Eyck family- Jane, Hubert, Lambert and Margareta, and Rogier van der Weyden. Our experienced tutor will enable you to consider and reflect upon why the Low Countries were such fertile ground for the growth of the arts in the fifteenth century, evaluate the achievements the van Eycks with particular focus on the Ghent altarpiece, identify aspects of symbolism in Flemish art, and consider what makes 15th-centry Flemish art distinctive in its achievement and historical context.. The tutor will encourage you to participate in class and group discussion in a relaxed and safe environment. No previous knowledge of art appreciation or the history of the Low Countries is necessary. Everyone is invited to join this fascinating course!
