Course description

This course is an introduction to Vincent van Gogh's work and, in particular, his use of colour. You will explore the way in which van Gogh's work was transformed by his discovery of the bright colours which characterise his famous works produced in a short period. Whilst his early works are monochromatic drawings and even his first oils are full of brown tones, it is strong colour that he is best known for. During a year spent in Paris Vincent experimented with colour and absorbed many artistic influences. Following this, his works became characterised by bright, bold colour. We will consider the early context and then concentrate on the later works from his most productive period when he produced paintings prolifically. Our experienced tutor will enable you to discuss the social and cultural context of van Gogh's work, analyse some of his paintings using technical vocabulary and debate the evolution of his style. Everyone is welcome to join this fascinating course! Please note that this course will be taught using hybrid delivery. Students will meet together in a venue whilst the tutor will teach virtually through an in-venue screen and sound system.
