Course overview

William Hogarth remains one of the most famous figures in British art, and we will discuss examples of his work from different genres. William Hogarth, a successful painter and engraver, was a key figure in the British art world of the eighteenth century. His work includes portraiture, history painting, and the satirical works for which he is now best remembered, and he contributed significantly to each genre. In this session, you will explore a broad selection of his art, relating it to the vibrant society in which he operated, and considering his significance for the development of British art.

Course description

In this art appreciation course looking at William Hogarth, you will gain a deeper understanding of the social, artistic and political context that he was working in. You'll be able to express your views on his work and take an active part in discussions able his work. You'll look at a range of information to help develop your understanding of his works and techniques.

Art history courses help you develop your knowledge of artists and the world they lived in. You'll explore the key influences behind Hogarth's work and be able to draw parallels with our lives today.
