Course overview

Join us to explore the vast spectrum of work by Laura Knight, pioneer woman artist who pushed all the boundaries she encountered. Throughout her life and career she pursued her creative path with determination and independence which resulted in a prolific output of paintings demonstrating the rapport she developed with her subjects. Laura Knight depicted coastal communities in North Yorkshire & Cornwall, the ballet & circus, gypsy community with informal observations full of insight and compassion for her subjects. additionally her War paintings and landscapes provide further exploration of her vast repertoire. the course material will comprehensively cover aspects of all these themes. This course is for learners who have a strong interest in Art with experience of previous study and a particular interest in this artist and discovering her work.

Course description

This course will explore a wide range of aspects of the work of Laura Knight. Starting with establishing the artist's background and development of her career and style we will use examples of her paintings and extracts of her autobiographies to construct a comprehensive exploration of her prolific output.

We will examine the way Laura Knight developed a rapport with her subjects and depicted coastal colonies in Staithes, North Yorkshire, and in Cornwall; behind the scenes at the ballet and circus; the gypsy community; commissioned War work; landscapes in the Malvern area; also some commercial poster work. By analysing her work integrated with extracts describing the situations and context in the artist's own words it will be possible to establish a deeper meaning of the material and gain an insight into her creative processes.

Prepare to be visually enthralled by the artist's innovative approach and insightful depiction of people from different walks of life.

Learners will be able to develop their understanding of how the career of this female artist fits into the wider context of women artists.

Learners will discuss and analyse a wide range of paintings by Laura Knight, making comparisons and contrasts and evaluating her output and contribution.

Fully illustrated with discussion which engages with all themes in Laura Knight's work.
