This lecture will look at the variety of architectural styles adopted by the British for public and private buildings during the period of the Empire in India.
Course description
This lecture will look at the variety of architectural styles adopted by the British for public and private buildings during the period of the Empire in India. These range from the neo-classical and Gothic revival to the so-called Indo- Saracenic and even Art Deco. Looking at examples from Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi and elsewhere, we will also consider what the shifting approaches may tell us about British attitudes to the imperial project.
