Course overview
Course description
The Fauvist movement took place officially between 1905 to 1908 but the influence of the movement continued and still continues to inspire contemporary artists who built upon the work of the Fauvist artists for many years. Fauvism was the exploration of bold vibrant colour in art not necessarily the realistic colours as would have been the accepted artistic style at the time . Find out why the Fauvists were entitled Fauvists ! Discover their use of bold and simplified form and how the colours used were expressive.
This session explores the work of the Fauvist artists and centres initially on the life and work of Henri Matisse. We look in detail at this artist , his influences , techniques , tools and personal life . We will discover how his work developed and how he continued to work despite physical difficulties. We explore his painting and his later collage work and stained glass designs .
We will discover the wonderful work of Georges Braque Andres Derain and Marc Chagall among others , again looking at their life and techniques influences and how they contributed to the movement. We also will discover which major artist was the father of Fauvism and why . As well as this we explore its links to expressionism and abstraction .
