Course overview

The Art of the Romanovs focuses on the portraits and public monuments of the Romanov dynasty from its founding in 1613 until its demise during the Russian Revolution in 1917. This course examines the evolution of Romanov portraiture and public monuments and explores formal and informal portraits of Romanov rulers, analysing their political and cultural significance and the artists behind these works. Key public monuments will be discussed with their symbolism and their role in shaping imperial identity and collective memory. You will gain an insight into how art served both as personal representation and public commemoration during the Romanov era. The course will have a 1 hour lunch break from 13:00 - 14:00.

Course description

The Art of the Romanovs celebrates the artistic legacy of the Romanov Dynasty (1613-1917). The Day School will cover: the portraits and public monuments to the Romanovs; which displayed to their citizens their power, wealth, and God-given right to rule.

This course offers an in-depth exploration of how Russia’s Romanov dynasty used visual culture to shape imperial identity and public memory. The evolution of Romanov portraiture from formal state images to more intimate representations, considering the political and personal motivations behind their creation.

This course will also investigate the design, symbolism and societal role of public monuments commemoration Romanov rulers and key events, analysing how these works contributed to the construction of national identity and historical narrative.

You will develop an understanding of the stylistic and thematic evolution of Romanov portraiture and public monuments.

Explore the roles of artists, patrons and the state in the creation and dissemination of official imagery.

This is an online course using lectures, power-points, you will be invited to discuss and answer questions on the themes explored.

There will be a 1 hour break between 1pm-2pm.
