Course description
On this seven week online course, we will learn about how British art of the twentieth century is outstanding for its range of interest, style and inherent individualism.
The course explores the richness and diversity of the fascinating work of a range of artists including Paul Nash, Graham Sutherland, Ben Nicholson and Henry Moore.
No previous experience is necessary - just a lively, open-minded interest in art!
Topics to be covered include the work of the following artists
Paul Nash; LS Lowry; Graham Sutherland; Ben Nicholson; Henry Moore;
and the portraits of Lucian Freud; and Modern Art and the Great War
At the end of the course you will be able to:
- identify two of the key characteristics of the work of three of the artists under discussion
- recognize the significance of at least one of the major influences - social, cultural, historical and/or political - on at least three of the artists explored in this course
- identify three characteristics of one of the art historical terms used in this course eg 'naturalism'; 'abstraction'
- identify at least one approach to the creative process of 3 of these artists eg observation; imaginative; spiritual; poetic
- recognize at least one of the major works of each of the artists under discussion
