Course overview
Course description
This course delves into the dynamic and transformative decade of the 1920s, exploring the intricate links between visual art, literature, and music. Students will journey through the surrealistic landscapes of French art, the bold expressions of German Expressionism, and the vibrant operas, ballets, and symphonies that marked this tumultuous period.
The course will highlight the cultural renaissance of the "Roaring Twenties" or "Jazz Age" in America and the "Golden Twenties" in Europe, a time of economic prosperity and artistic flourishing following the devastation of World War I. French speakers referred to this era as the "Années folles" or "crazy years," capturing the social, artistic, and cultural dynamism of the time.
Each week, presentations will feature a curated selection of artworks, films, operas, music, and poetry that encapsulate the spirit of the 1920s. Students will engage with masterpieces from renowned artists, composers, and writers, gaining an understanding of how the decade's artistic expressions were intertwined with its historical context.
By examining these diverse mediums, students will develop a comprehensive appreciation for the rich tapestry of 1920s culture and its lasting impact on the arts.
