Course overview

This engaging two-week course offers an introduction to the art of sculpture, teaching you how to observe, analyse, and interpret three-dimensional works across different periods and styles. From the idealised forms of classical marble statues to the bold, experimental nature of modern and contemporary installations, we will explore fundamental sculptural concepts such as form, mass, space, texture, and movement. Through a close study of key examples, you will also learn about essential techniques—including carving, modelling, casting, and assembling—as well as the importance of materials in shaping meaning and expression. No prior knowledge is required.

Course description

Join us for a 2-week introduction to the world of sculpture, where we will explore how to look at, analyse, and interpret three-dimensional works of art. You will gain insights into key concepts such as mass, space and volume, texture, and movement, thus developing a deeper understanding of how sculptures communicate ideas and emotions. You will learn about key techniques (carving, modelling and assembling), and about the importance of materials. Examples will be diverse: Figurative works (like traditional statues and busts) and abstract; from monumental to miniature; classical, archaic, or modern. Whether you’re looking at ancient masterpieces or contemporary installations, this short course will help you engage with sculptures in a more meaningful way. It will provide you with concrete keys to use when looking at a 3-D work of art. No prior knowledge of art or sculpture is needed. Perfect for anyone seeking to enhance their appreciation of sculpture in all its forms.
