Course description

The Art of the Romanovs celebrates the artistic legacy of the Romanov Dynasty (1613-1917). The course will cover the portraits and public monuments to the Romanovs commissioned by the famous painters and sculptors of the day, such as The Bronze Horseman to Peter the Great. The stunning architecture of St. Petersburg founded by Peter the Great, with its Summer Palace, Winter Palace, and Alexander Palace built by the ruling Empresses. The priceless art collection of Catherine the Great, housed in Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, created by buying up the art collections of the most prestigious art collectors in Europe, such as Sir Robert Walpole. One of lasting legacies of the Romanov Dynasty is the magnificently jewelled Faberge Easter Eggs exchanged between Tsar Alexander III and his wife, and then between Tsar Nicholas II and his wife, as well as his mother. Over 50 Faberge Easter Eggs were made, themed each year, with a surprise inside. Royal Gifts were also exchanged between British Royal Family and the Romanovs which kept the dynastic and diplomatic ties between the two families and two countries until the Russian Revolution of 1917.
