Course overview
Course description
Women War artists are notable by their absence from many overviews of war paintings. In order to redress the balance of the narrative, each week this course covers different women war artists set within the historical context. There will be a bias towards British artists, but not exclusively. The course focusses on conflicts including the Crimean War, World War I, the Spanish Civil War and World War II and will introduce you to artists such as Elizabeth Southerden Thompson Butler, Clare Atwood, Hannah Hoch, Kathe Hollwitz, Andeles Torner Cevera Rosario de Velasco and Evelyn Dunbar our tutor will enable you to analyse the artworks that these artists produced before, during, and after the war and discuss the different media these artists used from pencil to oil as well as print media. You will also debate why women's war art has been hidden from the general overview of war art as well as discussing women war artists who created war art after their particular conflict ended. Nothing is required, but a pen and pencil may be useful for you to make your own notes. Please note that there are some graphic images within this course, so this may not suit everyone. The tutor will, however, create a safe, relaxed environment during the session.
