Course description

Does God exist?

Well, the existence of evil (viz. pain, suffering, …) in the world has been considered by many to be problematic for the claim that God exists.

This course considers this issue rationally and rigorously.

It considers a number of key things:

(i) the classical or standard variety of the problem, viz. the logical problem of evil ;

(ii) an influential response which has been given to it by an American philosopher, Alvin Plantinga ;

(iii) and some theodicies.

A theodicy is an explanation of the existence of evil in a world created by God.

Two of the principal theodicies in the Christian tradition are considered.

The first is that of St Augustine of Hippo.

The second is the re-statement by a modern theologian and philosopher, John Hick, of the theodicy of an early Christian, St. Irenaeus.

No prior specialist knowledge is required to attend this course.

Sessions consist of clearly structured talks and an encouragement to ask questions and to make comments. Participants are assisted in their understanding of the subject and in their critical engagement with it. There is in each session an opportunity to engage with other participants.
