Course overview

This online course, delivered by an experienced tutor is a progression from the autumn course "Beginners: A History of the Medieval Rus of Ukraine". However, new learners are warmly welcomed. The Ukraine is firmly part of modern news due to conflict in the region however, the history of this region in the Middle Ages will be the focus of the learning on this course. What happened to the Rus Empire of Kiev during the Middle Ages? What was it like? What dangers did it face? This course aims to answer those questions.

Course description

Learners will have the opportunity for a detailed look at the state of the Kievan Rus principalities during the High Middle Ages. During this intriguing course we will explore the principalities' culture and their rivals culminating in their conflict with the Mongols of the Steppes.

We will look at key characters of the period, particularly Yaroslav the Wise and identify key features of his achievements. We will also explore several elements of the Rus society in the 11th Century, and explore the main reasons for the emergence of the Rus Principalities.

We will also explore the rule of Vladimir Monomakh and identify the features of that rule.

This is an online course with an experienced tutor. There will be clear learning outcomes which will enable learners to chart their progress of knowledge over this fascinating period.

Learners are encouraged to research the period either through reading material or other forms of media. Although this is not mandatory it may certainly whet your appetite for the course itself and enrich learner contribution to the learning sessions.
