Course overview
Course description
The region known as Wessex is remarkable for its range of landscape types, and for its valued landscapes and semi-natural habitats. This course integrates the main components of landscape history, particularly the geology, soils, hydrology, and ecology and how these are utilised and impacted by human society, including climate change. Since 1500, history demonstrates changes from a medieval economy, dominated by the church and aristocracy, to one that was largely ‘privatised; through enclosure; while the New Forest became, in effect, state land.
