Course description

In this field-trip, we will visit and study some emblematic building in Greenwich. While doing so, you will learn about history and architecture. We will me at 10:30 in front of the Queen’s House (Romney Road). After examining the outside features and style of Inigo Jones’ masterpiece and how it sits in its surroundings (the park, the Thames, the Royal Naval College), we will enter the building and discover its interior, in particular the great hall. We will see what makes it a great example of Renaissance architecture. We will then cross the road and walk around the Royal Naval College. We will look at the façades, and learn how to describe their main features. We will discuss the role of famous architects Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawksmoor in the designing of this ensemble. Finally, we will walk to St Alfege Church on Greenwich Church Street and learn about this history of this classical building, designed by Hawksmoor.
