Course overview

Regency society rakish, raffish but with a fondness for wonderful architecture, or was there more to it than that?

Course description

Alongside the Tudors the Regency is the most familiar period of English history, but is it really? The familiar view from novels, film and TV is of a stylish high society, frequenting fashionable spar towns. Meanwhile in town and country huge changes were taking place, population was growing, people were moving to rapidly expanding towns. The country was emerging from 20 yrs of war, technology was changing and an expanding Empire brought new products into people’s homes. The long rumbling differences between George III and his eldest son Prince George created political tensions while across The Channel the French Revolution and subsequent rise of Napoleon shocked and rocked Europe.
