Course description

Essex museums are full of wonderful and sometimes surprising objects. Join us as we unlock the secrets of some of these and discover what they tell us about everyday life in Essex in the past. Drawing from collections across the county, we will cover a range of times and topics and give you some ideas for places to visit next and how to get the most out of your visit. Each week we will take two objects currently on public display in different museums to investigate them as sources for the history of Essex. We will discuss how museums interpret the objects they look after and practice active investigation techniques that you can use each time you visit a museum. Our approach will consider physical features, function, construction and significance, as we ask what the objects are, what we can learn from them and what more we would like to know. We will cover a number of themes including work, industry, the built environment, domestic objects, archaeology and a few mystery objects. You can expect group discussion and plenty of opportunities for sharing ideas and suggestions for places around the county to make your own visits.
