Course overview

On discovering Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922, Howard Carter described seeing 'Wonderful things' within this site in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. A century ago, these excavations were ‘hot off the press’ news. During this session we will consider the excavations by Carter, and also other intriguing excavations from different parts of the world that have enhanced our understanding of the past. Find out about some of the most famous archaeological excavations from around the world in this day course, we will discuss what made these sites so important and consider some of the methods used by the archaeologists working on the site.

Course description

During this 1-day workshop we will draw evidence from some excavations that may be not so famous for a variety of reasons but contribute a wealth of evidence to support our understanding of the past. In addition to that, this course will highlight some of the techniques used following the excavation, when examining the artefacts recovered. It will also ensure that leaners are aware of where it is possible to find further resources linked to what has been studied.

This 1-day workshop will provide an introduction for those who would like to gain some knowledge on archaeology and a selection of archaeological sites from different places and a range of time periods.

You will learn through group discussion and tutor led activities. If you have experience in the field of Archaeology, you will be welcomed to share your knowledge with others. And if you have just recently started this new interest of Archaeology then this course will give you a great head start in learning about some great excavations of all times.

Please share with your tutor if you found this workshop interesting and would like further learning, as we will happily set up more longer courses for you to enjoy over the next academic year.
