Join us as we explore the development of the myth of the heroic “gentleman highwayman” which has grown up over the last 250 years in literature, the arts and media.

Course description

We will look in detail at the careers of a number of notorious highway robbers and the cat and mouse games they played with the authorities who struggled to apprehend them with the very limited resources at their disposal.

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:

- Understand the motivations and operational methods of 18th century highway robbers.

- Appreciate how the modern myth of the "gentleman highwayman" has developed over the last 250 years.

-Recognise the challenges facing the forces of law and order in Georgian England when trying to deal with the issue of highway robbery.
