Course overview

On this beginners’ history course we will take a detailed look at the importance of Mercia as a realm in Anglo-Saxon England, charting how this region in particular came to be so politically powerful and important, and what we can say about its administration and kings. We will also go on to look at the life and times of King Offa, and eventually the appearance of the Vikings on British shores! This is a great course to start learning more about both British history and the origins of Viking history, in the historical era known as the Dark Ages.

Course description

We will begin by considering the state of Anglo-Saxon England in the early eighth century, examining the state and condition of the various kingdoms of the time and their relationships with each other. We will also make some assessment of the kind of society that Anglo-Saxon England had created by that time, in order to have a better overview of the period. Additionally, we will also examine the condition of the Pictish kingdoms of the north and Dalriada, as well as the kingdoms of Wales, and their relationships with Anglo-Saxon England. In particular, we will then look at the reasons why Mercia had established a hegemony over much of England and how that was maintained - in particular focusing on the policies of its greatest king, Offa of Mercia. The course will be delivered by an experienced and friendly tutor who will build your knowledge around one of the most fascinating subjects in History whilst facilitating your own critical thinking and evaluation skills. For optional pre-course preparation you could take a look at 'The Anglo Saxons; A History of the Beginnings of England' by Marc Morris. This reading is not at all mandatory but may whet your appetite for more!
